Hobart: Day 1, January 28, 2019
Our
Wineglass Bay tour departs from Hobart, heading east then following the Great
Eastern Drive north. We’ll travel through the seaside towns of Orford,
Triabunna and Swansea as we make our way along the East Coast of Tasmania
towards the Freycinet National Park. We’ll stop briefly along the way to
take in some of the local highlights such as Raspins Beach (Orford), Spiky
Bridge and The Bark Mill (Swansea).
Itinerary
would involve leaving the port once everyone is on the bus (approximately
815am) and then exploring our way up the East Coast of Tasmania.I can offer interesting and scenic stops at as many coastal towns as you please along the way to Wineglass Bay. I would suggest:
Orford (apprx 9am, for
a quick toilet break and views of Maria Island)
Triabunna (approx 915am for hand feeding native Tasmanian wildlife)
Swansea (approx 1015am for a cup of coffee/tea)
Friendly Beaches (approx 11am, officially entering the Freycinet National Park)
Coles Bay (approx 1145am for an early lunch break before going on our hike to Wineglass Bay)
Lunch will be had at
Coles Bay, where you can enjoy your fresh oysters and/or abalone from the
Freycinet Marine Farm, or choose from the wide selection of seafood available
at the Freycinet Fish and Chip Shop. If seafood isn’t your thing, the
Freycinet Bakery Cafe has plenty to offer, or you can visit the
Iluka Tavern or simply grab something simple from the Supermarket.
Whatever you treat yourself with, be sure to also grab some drinking water
because after lunch we go for our walk.
The walk to
Wineglass Bay Lookout is one of the Great Short Walks of Tasmania and
usually takes us around 45mins to get to the top. The 1.4 km walk is uphill on
a rocky but well constructed path with stone steps. As a group, we walk to the
Wineglass Bay Lookout where we help each other out to ensure we get the magic
shots of Tasmania’s most famous photographed views. We enjoy the excitement
and emotions of the moment and take in the rewarding and world famous view.
From the Lookout you
will be given the option to return to the start of the walk with your guide, or
for the keen walkers you can choose to spend the rest of your time completing
the walk down to Wineglass beach (2hr return). There you can enjoy your
lunch break with the famous white Wineglass Bay Beach sand between your toes,
take a short stroll on the beach, take a swim in the stunning clear ocean,
explore the rocky shoreline, the choice is yours!
If you choose to
travel back with your guide, you will explore more of the Freycinet National
Park through a series of short scenic walks. You’ll visit Honeymoon
Bay or Sleepy Bay and Cape Tourville Lookout.
After about
4-5 hours of fun and exploration in the Freycinet National Park we all
reunite and jump aboard the bus again to make our way back to Hobart. The drive
home is usually spent sharing our experiences and tales with each other and
celebrating our amazing day out. We’ll get you back at your accommodation
around 6:30-7:00pm.

This product is specifically
designed for Cruise Ship passengers. Land based passengers should book through
product 13015P1 for the same itinerary. After pickup from Hobart, travel along
the western shore of the River Derwent where you will view the historic
buildings of Salamanca Place and Battery Point. Your guide will share
information about the reclamation of Salamanca Wharf from the river Derwent,
the history of the defences of the area, the history of Hobart, and how
convicts were used for the construction of the city. Continue to the summit of
Mt Wellington where you can enjoy the breathtaking views of greater Hobart and
the Tasman Bridge, weather permitting. Should weather preclude the running of
the trip up the mountain, you be given the option to visit the Mt. Nelson
Signal Station. After departing Hobart, you will travel along the Brooker
Highway to Bridgewater and visit the iconic Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary. Here
you can see Tasmanian wildlife, including the Tassie Devil, Forest Kangaroos,
Wallabies, Wombats, Koalas and many more. Have a conversation with Fred, the
sulphur crested cockatoo, who is over 103 years old! In Richmond, you will gain
more insight into the early convict days that preceded Port Arthur, with a
stroll through the oldest goal in Tasmania. You will also see the oldest
convict constructed sandstone bridge still in use in Australia and St. John's
Catholic Church, the oldest Catholic Church in Australia, then you can wander
around, and explore on your own, this quaint little hamlet, with its numerous
old and heritage listed buildings, arts and craft galleries, antique shops,
etc. A visit to the Old Hobart Town model, set out as Hobart was in the 1820s,
is well worth while. An allowance of 1 hour has been scheduled for the stop in
Richmond. This is enough time to grab a quick snack at the Bakery and explore
what Richmond has to offer. We DO NOT recommend having a sit down meal in a
cafe or restaurant, as this will eat up your hour allowance in itself. On the
return to Hobart, time permitting, we will travel south along the eastern shore
of the River Derwent, to Kangaroo Bluff Battery, where you can explore the
subterranean passages and armories and learn more about the history of this
site. For a spectacular panoramic view of the Derwent River and Hobart City, we
will visit the Rosny Point Lookout, time permitting. The view stretches north
to Lutana and south to Opossum Bay. This is a suitable vantage point for your
guide to explain the Tasman bridge disaster that happened 40 years ago.
